Nuit Blache - No sleep for the rock stackers

Tonight's rock stacking done during Toronto's fourth annual Scotiabank Nuit Blanche was a huge hit with the crowd. Thanks to Sun Jye and Adam, the great rock balancers of Toronto, for letting them join me for the night.

I was very happy to have so many people stay and watch for awhile, and even join in and learn to balance (and many of which did an amazing job with their rocks).

New city, new rocks

Only been in Toronto now a few months but I do miss having a lake front beach littered with a massive selection of rocks to stack within 5 minutes of my place, however the good news is that with just a quick jump on the street car I was able to be at Queen and Spadina which led me to meet Adam and Sun Jye, who have been doing rock balancing on the sidewalks for awhile.

Thanks to them for letting me join in on the street. It's funny that the first money I earn inside Toronto (all other money comes from clients in Oakville) was done busking for change on the streets. A most amazing time.

Meeting a rockstar

It seems that the speed in which update this blog is akin to the speed of the rocks I stack, and it feels like I am indeed gathering moss and need to get rolling again.

Over the last few months a few great experiences have helped with my stacking life, the first being able to display some of my work at the 2009 Toronto Home & Garden show. While I only had 3 stacks on display, one large and two small, they attracted a fair amount of attention. These were my first stacks in which I drilled and braced together for a 'permanent' display. Of course, whatever attention I received was but a speck compared to the Daryl Maddeaux, the 'father' of stacking here in Toronto.

I was ever so lucky to be able to speak with Daryl and he even offered some stacking tips and tricks. Meeting him has been a great inspiration and has done much to banish the doubt one has of doing stacking as legitimate work, which brings me to my next event.

About a month after the show I was contacted via my website, stonearth.ca, by my first client whom wishes for me to create several stacks for her. I won't say much at this point but the feeling is rather surreal to have an actual job come from this, something that would have never crossed my mind as a possibility when I first started doing this in the parks for fun.

Inspirational!

My new year has started with a most amazing surprise. While reading through the latest copy of the Oakville Beaver newspaper I come across the arts section and an article showing the most 'Inspirational local artists of 2008' and amongst these people ( including such talent as Caroline Torti ) was my name and write up. I am just so amazed and thankful for all this support for what started as nothing more then my own personal meditation.

Fark'ed rocks

A link appeared recently on FARK.com which featured a few wonderful stone balancing images. A few I could recognize as those done by Bill Dan. As always the comments from fellow farkers (my account is DraXXXen) prove amusing and full of deep insight :)

Mystery of lakefront stone sculptures solved!

Wow!! Imagine my surprise when I found out from a few friends that I am featured on the front page of the Oakville Beaver newspaper (as well as another full page spread on the interior)! Thanks to everyone who expressed such an interest in this!

Click here for the article as it appears online, though I will have to hunt down a printed copy after work today.
